Crypto investing basics for Canadians
Digital assets are speculative, technically complex, and subject to sharp changes in market value. Before using any crypto service, understand what you own, who controls the assets, and what costs and risks apply.
Custody and access
Custody describes who holds the assets or keys used to control them. A self-custody arrangement and an intermediary-held account have different responsibilities, security considerations, and recovery paths. Confirm the arrangement before you fund an account.
Volatility and allocation
Crypto prices can move quickly in either direction. A thoughtful plan considers whether any exposure fits your financial circumstances and appetite for loss. Diversification does not remove market risk, and a smaller initial commitment does not make a loss impossible.
Records and security
Maintain records of transactions and relevant documentation. Use strong, unique passwords and available multi-factor authentication, and be alert to phishing messages or requests for sensitive information.
Before using a platform
Read the terms, understand fees, verify the responsible entities, and know how funding and withdrawal mechanisms work. General website information cannot substitute for advice tailored to your situation.
